TURANGI/TAUPO TROUT FISHING CALENDAR…

New Zealand’s Turangi/Taupo area is an all year round trout fishing paradise that boasts, the finest trout on earth! Big trout proliferate in the pristine rivers & mountain streams that abound the area and the different types of trout fishing tours and experiences available are virtually unlimited!

I will tailor a fishing adventure specifically with you, the visiting angler, in mind. I will take you to areas renowned as world-class fly fishing destinations. Whether you are an expert or a novice, you can experience the thrill of fishing the many rivers and lakes in the central North Island, including the mighty Tongariro River, in pursuit of large brown trout and rainbow trout.

Summer Trout Fishing
(1st October – 31st May)

Weather wise, conditions are quite settled by October or November with calm warm days between 18 – 290C by mid December (70 – 980F).

‘Summer’ fishing officially begins on the 1st day of October when the ‘back country’ streams reopen after being closed for the winter. During these summer months, I can escort you to the many rivers and streams where you will be enthralled by sight fishing for brown & rainbow trout using light gear – as well as the extraordinary scenery all within easy driving distance of Turangi.

By way of a change, you may want to experience the thrills of raft fishing the more inaccessible waters or night fishing the stream and river mouths; either way, your adrenaline is guaranteed to flow. Fly-in trips to more remote wilderness areas by helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft can also be arranged.

A little more relaxing but no less exciting is the fishing from my well-equipped and comfortable boat - "Ragtime" – fly-fishing at the Tongariro Delta or on the mountain lakes noted for trophy trout. As my guest, you also have the choice of deep water trolling, harling (trolling with a fly) with light gear or jigging – whatever suits your particular requirements best!

During summer months trout have returned to the lake from spawning in the rivers and are feeding voraciously on smelt (small fish) around the lake margins and drop-offs. Superb shore based fly fishing can regularly be encountered at this time. Night fishing increases the chances of catching a 10lb plus trout!!

For those who enjoy dry-fly fishing, evening rises are a regular occurrence throughout summer and cicada fishing can be spectacular in the back country streams and lakes.

Winter Trout Fishing
(1st June – 31st September)

Things start to cool down a little by April and by June we are experiencing beautiful crisp clear days of around 10 – 160C. The frosts can be a tad chilly first thing!

‘Winter’ fishing officially begins on the 1st day of June when the backcountry streams close and upper fishing limits are imposed on the larger rivers to allow trout uninterrupted access to spawning water.

The Turangi area, and in particular the mighty Tongariro River is world renown for winter runs of ‘steelhead’ Rainbow and Brown trout. Spawning runs can start as early as February or March and may extend right through to December at times. The main runs, however, normally occur from May to October. The trout entering the rivers from Lake Taupo at this time of the year are in prime condition and consequently put up a great fight when hooked!

With approximately 50,000 – 70,000 fresh-run trout entering the Tongariro River alone each year, when the fishing is ‘on’ (usually after a ‘fresh’) absolutely unparalleled fishing can be experienced! As I am fishing most days even when not guiding, I always have a good idea where the fish are in the river to maximise my Client’s chances of success.

Great boat fishing is also available on Lake Taupo throughout the winter. In periods of dry weather trout can gather en masse at river mouths waiting for ideal conditions to enter the rivers to spawn. A great example of this is the Tongariro River Delta, which can pretty much only be accessed by boat. By careful anchoring in the right spot truly fabulous fly fishing can be encountered. Other methods such as jigging can also be very productive.
